STAIN REMOVAL:
Whatever the nature of the stain, the following general procedure should always be followed:

Valid for all types of carpets and rugs whether they are woollen or made from synthetic fibre.

Shampoo and then dab with methylated spirits. |
Beer |
Dab with warm water (max 50◦C) to which 3% methylated spirits has been added |
Biro ink |
Use perchlorethylene and methylated spirits |
Blood |
Dab with cold water and then shampoo. If there are still traces, treat them with 5% diluted ammoniac. |
Butter, Oil, Gravy and Sauces |
Dab with white spirit or perchlorethylene and then shampoo. If the stain persists dab with 5% diluted ammoniac. |
Candle wax, paraffin |
Put blotting paper over the stain and go over with a warm iron. Dab with perchlorethylene and then shampoo |
Chewing Gum |
Apply an anti-gum (product sold by any pharmacy or chemist) or dab with perchlorethylene |
Chocolate, caramel, sweets |
Dab with warm water (max 50◦C) or with 5% diluted ammoniac |
Coffee, Tea |
Shampoo. If the stain persists, dab with methylated spirits or 10% diluted ammoniac |
Cosmetics & medicaments |
Apply white spirit or perchlorethylene and then shampoo. If the stain persists, use 5% diluted ammoniac or methylated spirits |
Eggs, albumin’s |
Dab with 5% diluted ammoniac or methylated spirits: then shampoo |
Fruits, foodstuffs |
Dab with warm water (max 50◦C) and then shampoo |
Glue, stain, varnish |
Apply white spirit or percholorethylene and then dab with warm water or shampoo. |
Grass, vegetables |
Moisten with methylated spirits |
Ink, aniline, carbon |
Remove as much as possible with blotting paper and then dab with a solution of 30% methylated spirits and 70% water: then shampoo. Pure lemon juice also gives good results |
Jam, syrup, fruit juices |
Dab with warm water (max 50◦C). If the stain persists, use white spirit or percholrethylene |
Mercurochrome |
Dab with a mixture of two-thirds water and one-third methylated spirits |
Mildew |
Dab with an ammoniacal water solution |
Milk, drinking chocolate |
Shampoo and then dab with 5% diluted ammoniac or methylated spirits. If the stain persists, use perchloroethylene or white spirit |
Mud |
Allow to dry and then go over with the vacuum cleaner |
Mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup |
Use 10% diluted ammoniac and then perchlorethylene. Shampoo if necessary |
Nail varnish |
Dab with acetone* and then shampoo |
Paint |
Oil paint: dab with white spirit and then shampoo. Latex: if the stain is new, dab with cold water. An old stain is very difficult to remove. Consult a specialist |
Perfume |
Dab with methylated spirits |
Rust |
Use 3% diluted potassium oxalate* or an anti-rust product* for textile |
Sugar |
Dab with warm water (max 50◦C) and then shampoo |
Tar, thick grease, grease for mechanical purposes |
Dab with whited spirit or perchlorethylene and then shampoo. Repeat the action with methylated spirits and then shampoo |
Tincture of iodine |
Dab with pure ammoniac |
Vomit, urine excrement |
Dab with a mixture of 50% vinegar and 50% water, or with methylated spirits, and then shampoo |
Water |
Use a clean cloth to absorb as much as the water as possible and leave to dry; deal with any “haloes” by shampooing or with methylated spirits |
Wax, wax polish, furniture or floor polish |
Apply with spirit or perchlorethylene and then shampoo. If the stain persists: 5% diluted ammoniac or methylated spirits |
Wine, lemonade |
Use a mixture of 50% vinegar and 50% water and then shampoo |
